A musical portrait of San Miguelito

The singer of “Acuarela potosina” announces that he is from San Luis Potosí and names San Miguelito as his neighbourhood. The song also invokes the cactus and eagle of Mexico’s national imagery, placing a local voice within a wider picture of the country.

Pepe Guízar, a composer from Guadalajara, wrote the song; Jorge Negrete helped popularise it. Accounts of its creation have accumulated competing stories. One local account places Guízar in El Peñasquito, a long-established cantina in the city, when he composed it.

The song’s San Miguelito is a real neighbourhood of the capital, with its own garden and church. Its name in the opening lines gives the musical portrait a specific address, even when the song is heard far away in Negrete’s recording.
