A bassist from Antímano and a salsa hit
Óscar D’León, Dimensión Latina and a song that travelled beyond Caracas.
The story
Before he became known internationally as a salsa singer, Óscar D’León grew up in Antímano, in western Caracas. He drove public transport there and bought his first double bass. Later he joined the orchestra Dimensión Latina.
With Dimensión Latina, D’León wrote and recorded “Llorarás”. Its singer addresses someone who has left him and imagines the moment when that person will regret it. The song became associated with the orchestra’s mid-1970s repertoire.
In 1977 D’León left Dimensión Latina to form his own orchestra, Salsa Mayor. His career took him to festivals far from Caracas, but Antímano remained part of his story.
In 2015 he returned to perform in the neighbourhood after an absence of decades. A report on the concert described the crowd singing along to “Llorarás”.
